Product Design I UX

Customer
Plex Media, an independent streaming platform for film and music discovery.
Customer
Plex Media’s existing library had grown faster than its interface, leaving users buried in menus and struggling to find anything worth watching or listening to. The product needed a structural rethink, not just a visual refresh.
The goal was to make discovery effortless again without losing the depth of the catalog.
Objective
Rebuild the browsing and playback experience around fast, confident discovery. The system needed to surface relevant content quickly, support both casual and power users, and scale cleanly across TV, mobile, and web.

Approch
The team started with usability testing on the existing product to pinpoint exactly where users got lost. Card sorting sessions and competitive research shaped a new navigation model, which was prototyped in low fidelity and stress-tested across dozens of real content libraries before moving into detailed design.
Solution
A restructured browsing experience built around personalized rows, faster search, and clearer metadata. Playback controls were simplified and made consistent across every supported device and screen size.

Time to first play dropped significantly, and users reported far higher satisfaction with discovery. The new structure gives Plex Media room to introduce personalization features without redesigning again.
